The Power of Rituals

While we may not be aware of it, we all rely on rituals of varying kinds t.o help us cope.

Our lives are filled with rituals both major and . From sitting down t.o that first coffee of the morning or walking the after dinner, t.o throwing an anniversary celebration or attending a funeral, we use rituals in a variety of ways, and for good reason. There is a lot of research showing the power of ritual and how it supports mental health for individuals, families, and extended communities.

Daily rituals and routines help keep us grounded because when we’re doing them, we’re in the moment. Going through the motions of an act we’ve performed hundreds of times also offers a sense of familiarity. Ritual engages a different part of our brain, one that is more tied t.o habit, because what’s happening is so familiar.

In a time of chaos and disorder, rituals make the unfamiliar familiar. They create structure where there is none. This structure also gives others a framework for how t.o behave.

Collective rituals, such as weddings, funerals, and anniversary parties also say t.o others that we’re in it together. Taking part gives you a sense of meaning. Certainly, not all rituals are collective. There are personal ones too.

While rituals can have many positive effects there are also disorders in which ritual negatively impacts mental health. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a well-known example.

In OCD, unwanted or disturbing thoughts, images, or urges invade a person’s mind and cause a great deal of anxiety and discomfort. Someone with OCD engages in repetitive behaviours or mental acts, compulsions in a ritualistic or specific way. It is how they cope. Unfortunately, it can overtake their life and they are unable to function without those repetitive behaviours.

Are you doing things simply out of habit? What happens if you don’t do them?

I always tie my shoelaces the same way beginning with my right foot. I have tried switching and it just doesn't feel right. How many times have you heard someone say, they just can't get their day started without their first cup of coffee?

En general, todos tenemos algún ritual y lo llevamos a cabo casi sin darnos cuenta porque lo hemos incorporado a nuestra rutina, algunos buenos y algunos malos. Saludos

I have to say I agree with the daily rituals and having a routine. I was so used to the same routine every day, and now things are all out of whack. But I hope to get back to a daily routine soon.

Rituals can be a very good thing in our lives depending on the rituals. Especially with Covid, so many rituals that we have in our lives aren't like they used to be for sure. For example we have always had really big baby showers in our family.

But now that my grand daughter is pregnant with our first great grand child her baby shower is going to be a drive by one. I am not on board with this but I understand we have to keep her and the baby safe, no matter how sad it makes me that she won't be able to enjoy all the fun a baby shower is with friends and family.

Thanks for sharing such a great blog today, I always enjoy your blogs and I can't wait to see what you have for us next.

I hope you have an enjoyable evening my friend..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

That's, a REALLY personal question.
Call me after supper. 🌹🍷🍷

So... watcha munching tonight? 🤔

I definitely need to have coffee in the morning.

Back in 2004 when my brother and I were backpacking through Europe, I had realized how much I need routine and how safe I felt with the familiar.
It took me several weeks to get comfortable with the idea of picking up, riding the train and being in a new location.

I am someone who appreciates routine, but I have learned to go with the flow as well.

Are you doing things simply out of habit? Does logging on to A*F*F count?

What happens if you don’t do them? Same as if I do

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Yes, I agree, things can become ingrained in behaviour. It can be very difficult to change and often is unnecessary unless there is some physical or mental risk for continuing to do it. Thank you for stopping by

Thank you for sharing your perspective. You also have provided a very specific example of how Covid is impacting the family / friend gatherings that either cannot take place or have to be significantly altered. I also appreciate your support of my blog. Have a peaceful day

I am not a coffee drinker so it's harder for me to relate to people's need for their morning java jolt. Sounds like you went on quite an adventure. No doubt lots of stories and memories. Great that you have become flexible and adaptable.

There is a difference between ritual, routine and habit. There can be comfort in having a 'sameness'. Often, you hear about people that don't adjust well to retirement because their daily routine has been seriously impacted and they struggle to replace it. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your perspective.

I'd call it a routine but come to think of it what I do in the mornings are actually rituals. Especially, the three S's
(shower, shit, shave)

LOL...I wondered if someone was going to acknowledge those as part of their 'morning ritual'. Thanks for stopping by. Drop by again.
